The Closet Cleanout
Spring is here, and what better way to welcome it than with a little bit of cleaning? And by a little bit I actually mean a major closet overhaul. I’ll be the first to admit that I am guilty of being a clothing hoarder – big time. Letting go of those pieces you once loved, or now have some sort of sentimental value really pulls at the heartstrings.
This year is different, and this year I’ve decided to change. I decided to be ruthless while going through my things, and change my whole approach on clothes and shopping. See the problem is, when you have too many things it’s easy to get overwhelmed and lost inside your closet. Who has time for that? So ruthless it is, and here are some of my tips for a major closet purge.
Start Off on the Right Foot
If you want to do this right you really need to make sure you have a good chunk of time. If you’ve been hoarding for years like me… then you probably should set aside at least a half of a day. Grab some boxes or some garbage bags so you’re prepared once you get the ball rolling, and throw on some tunes to make it a real party.
Take it All Out
If you’re serious about clearing out all of your unnecessary clothes then I suggest taking absolutely everything out of your closet, and I mean everything! Take it all out, empty those drawers, shelves, and hanging racks – leave no stragglers behind! Put everything on your bed so you know what you’re working with.
The Sorting Game
Now begins the fun – and I say fun loosely, but go through each item and separate everything into three different piles. You have the keepers, the maybes, and the no’s. This part usually isn’t too bad because typically you know which pieces are definite keeps, and definite no’s. The hardest part is deciding what to do with the maybes.
Yes, No, Maybe So
Deciding on what to keep out of your maybe pile can be a challenge. Here are a list of things I always try to keep in mind with each item:
- Does it have rips or does it look really worn? ( If so, ditch it )
- Have you worn it in the last year or can you even remember the last time you wore it? ( If not, ditch it )
- Try it on see how it feels ( If you’re not in love with it still then ditch it… it’s a maybe for a reason )
- Do you have any items that are similar that you’re keeping? ( If so, pick your favourite and ditch the rest )
I literally had some pieces that I kept year after year always thinking I would re-wear them, and guess what? I never did. They just sat in my closet taking up precious space, or getting lost underneath other clothes. The hardest part is letting go, but once you do you won’t even think about those ones that could’ve been – out of sight out of mind.
Nothing feels better than being able to see all of your clothes organized and in one place. I think getting in the habit of regular clean outs and organization is so important, because it’s really easy to get to the point of drowning in your closet. The more you have the more overwhelming it can be when trying to get ready. Taking a more conscious approach to your closet, and shopping will go a long way and make getting ready less of a stress.
