What is Success?

What exactly is success? I think this is one of those questions that we all have a skewed perception of the answer. The big house, the fancy car, and the stable job that pays for everything you’d ever need and more – that’s success right? The older I get the more I realize that maybe that’s not success, or maybe that’s not success to me.

What I’ve come to terms with is that success is different for everyone. In my humble opinion success is happiness. Success is achieving your goals – whatever they may be ( big or small ). Success is building lasting relationships. Success is that feeling you get when you’ve done something out of your comfort zone.

Success doesn’t necessarily mean having the flashiest stuff. For a long time I had that skewed perception of success. I was always thinking if only I had this or if only I could do that, then I will have made it. The problem with that perception of success is that you’re constantly wanting more than what you have, and you’ll never be satisfied.

The key is to set personal goals for yourself. Set some short term and longer term goals and make sure they’re measurable. Write them down and check back in on them over time. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish in time when you set your mind to it. When you start achieving your own personal goals you’ll start to feel successful in your own way. A lot of people are intimidated by setting goals because they think that they have to be some big extravagant thing, but they really don’t. They don’t even have to be career, money, or number related.

So start redefining your own meaning of success and determine what makes you happy. It’s easy to lose focus and think of all the things you don’t have, so take a step back and look at all the things you do have. Count all the success you already have in your life that you may have overlooked before.

You could have all the fanciest things in the world but if you’re not happy then are you really successful in the end?
